Somatic Resilience and Regulation: Early Trauma, Elective Module A
with Kathy L. Kain
& Stephen J. Terrell, SEP, PsyD

Narrative; Vagus System and Anxiety; Sexual Dysfunction and Trauma

In response to requests from class participants, we have added an optional fourth module to the Early Trauma series. We will cover the topics listed below. This is an ambitious list, and we are not expecting to cover each of these topics in full detail. Rather, we want to address the topics in sufficient detail for participants to feel they are oriented to the subject, have some pragmatic tools for working with these in the context of their trauma recovery practice, and understand where these topics fit in the overall context of recovery from early trauma.

There will also be time for discussion and review of previous course content, but we are a planning to offer ongoing consultation/tutorial/study groups to support the further deepening of expertise in the course material. Information on those groups will be sent as we get it organized.

Each of these topics could be a freestanding workshop of its own. We are open to continuing to develop future modules and specialty programs that would allow us to go into more depth in any of the individual subjects of the Early Trauma modules. Please feel free to let us know of your interests and we will take that into account in our future planning and scheduling.

  • Polyvagal meets Anxious: Implications of the ANS/vagus system in panic, interoceptive dysfunction, and syndromal dysregulation
  • Working with narrative: When the story and history are important
  • Sexual dysfunction related to trauma: Building knowledge and practical interventions for working with one of the symptoms of early trauma that is often not discussed or disclosed by clients

Each of the above topics will include in it the opportunity for developing deeper skills in:

  • titration
  • understanding how early trauma affects interoceptive awareness
  • working with more refinement with pre/post-prodromals
  • recognizing more subtle indicators of when the client is within his/her window of tolerance, and when s/he is using management strategies (the “faux window”)
  • coupling dynamics

Must have completed all three modules of Somatic Resilience and Regulation after Early Trauma series, or Resilient Child series.
